How China’s older adults navigate the world of modern love

Older Chinese individuals are breaking away from traditional norms and exploring the tender world of modern dating. Their quest for companionship is marked by an openness to building relationships, increasingly facilitated by digital platforms like dating apps and livestreaming channels.

Lik Sam Chan

Dr Lik Sam Chan is an assistant professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research examines the intricate relationship between digital platforms, gender and sexuality, and culture.

Yongjian Li

Yongjian Li is a PhD candidate and lecturer at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. His research focuses on digital mobilities and internal migration in the Chinese context to examine the interaction of digital media, migration, and ageing.

Kara Ortiga

Kara Ortiga is a PhD candidate at Macquarie University in Sydney. Her research focuses on new media audiences and their relationships with technology, politics, and information. Before jumping into academia, she was a journalist in the Philippines, covering culture and the arts. Her work has been published in Esquire, VICE, and CNN Philippines, among a few.
