Are smart homes a dumb idea?

As you leave for work, you yell “lock” and “camera on” to keep the house secure, before telling your vacuum to clean the bedroom carpet while you're out. It's not a sci-fi film - the technology is available now. But do we really want our homes to be controlled by technology?

Scope

As you get ready to leave the house, you shout “bedroom lights off”, and set your heating to go off and come back on at midday as your daughter will be home for lunch. You track your 12-year-old son to make sure he made it to school, and replace the empty milk carton so your fridge doesn't order another one. The last thing you do is yell “lock” and “camera on”, before messaging your LG robotic vacuum cleaner via LINE to do a deep clean. Your house is secure, and you’re ready to go to work. This isn’t a scene from the future. The technology is available now. But do we really want our homes to be invaded and controlled by technology?
