Reality sucks! The science of escapism

The allure of a virtual world – in which anyone could have magical powers and take risks without consequences – is evidenced by the fact that nearly 19 million people play video games in the UK alone. Canvas8 sat down with Dr. Andrew Kuo to understand why we actively escape into virtual worlds.

In October 2015, experts from around the globe gathered in Berlin for the biggest event in the history of their craft – the final League of Legends World Championship. The PC gaming tournament was streamed online, with 334 million people worldwide tuning in over the four weeks of competition – it was even picked up by BBC Three. This year, the tournament is set to culminate in Los Angeles, and is expected to be bigger than ever.
