The conventional roster of life milestones is under review. Having kids in your 30s is no longer a given, if kids are part of the plan at all. Career progression is non-linear. Older Adults are finding new forms of independence. And Gen Z are embracing a more fluid definition of home.

People are craving comfort. Amid what can feel like a state of constant crisis – a layering of traumatic societal events – it can sometimes seem like we’ve lost a sense of scale and cohesion. In the face of this, the desire to retreat into nostalgia is more seductive than ever. 

Nostalgia Reimagined 

While people are craving memorable and immersive experiences, there's no longer a singular definition of what this might look like. Some are embracing maximalist hedonism through clubbing and extreme tourism, while others are tapping into more gentle, inward-looking, and contemplative experiences.

Nightlife in the UK is often described as in decline, and the data back this up: one in four late-night venues has closed since 2020.

 Yet one corner of the scene is bucking the trend. Gen X – those between the ages of 46 and 61 – are helping revive the UK’s club culture, drawn back to the dancefloor by retro tunes, pre-midnight starts and throwback nights. In fact, there has been a 19% surge in attendance for nostalgia-themed dance events, including 

, which programmes ‘70s to ‘90s music; the over–30s event

Daytime parties are having a moment, too, with one in six UK events now starting before 6 pm. 

, clubbing is becoming increasingly more viable for those with demanding jobs and responsibilities.

It’s a trend that music journalist Manu Ekanayake has noticed first-hand. “[It’s] a movement I’ve been part of myself, as I’ve seen nights such as 

 grow over the last 16 years, expanding from a small basement event to even having its own festival, Convenanza, in France,” he says. While there’s a contingent of younger clubbers there, too, he describes the crowd as “60% older heads.” Ekanayake sees it as part of a “definite trend towards the Gen X clubbers I know being more present at events”, citing a large Gen X presence at underground warehouse party 

, DJ Harvey’s Ministry of Sound appearances, or

What’s driving this? Gen X are often past the most expensive and time-consuming stages of child-rearing, and many are now empty-nesters, meaning they are searching for new experiences. Many clubs and promoters, noticing Gen Z’s apparent lack of appetite for partying, are advertising to these older clubbers. For nightlife researcher Dr Lucy Bennett, it also connects with shifting attitudes towards ageing. “People in their 40s and 50s today often don’t see themselves as too old for nightlife and clubbing,” she says. “They may have a higher disposable income than younger people and can afford to travel and have nights out. Some may have fewer responsibilities than they did in their 30s, allowing them to return to these activities they may have enjoyed when they were younger.”

Amid a landscape of low institutional trust, rocketing prices and political turbulence, the UK is experiencing a period of uncertainty. 84% of Britons believe that the country is divided and this sense of political and climate upheaval, compounded by an accelerating technological age that has left people ever more tethered to screens, is stirring up a longing for simpler times.

Facebook and TikTok are now awash with nostalgic content celebrating years gone by and nightlife promoters are eager to capitalise on this appetite to return to a happier, more united past.

 This, in a sense, is a psychological response: when the present feels unstable or difficult, the past offers certainty, resolution and a sense of comfort.

Indeed, much as the Roaring Twenties offered an escape from the shadow of war a century ago, older generations today are craving a similar release from the pressures of modern life in the post-COVID-19 era. Periods of collective hardship are often followed by a hunger for hedonism, and for today’s clubbers, that translates into a craving for the buzz they remember from the ‘90s and ‘00s. Nightlife is answering the call, with a wider, more considered range of options than the sweat-drenched all-nighters of decades gone. For Gen X, this can mean hangover-free Mondays, thanks to a surge of daytime and early-finish events, while playlists of disco to indie, house and rave do the emotional work of transporting clubbers straight back to their formative years. Many remember the collective joy and sense of togetherness that defined the nights out of their youth, and are actively seeking to recreate those feelings.

Within this increasingly fractured society, Dr Bennett argues that club culture itself is becoming more fragmented, too, “with different kinds of events cropping up, such as day festivals, themed club nights, live music events and other niche, focused events and scenes.” 

This includes the return of club nights from the ‘90s such as Peaches, God’s Kitchen and Clockwork Orange which are mainly frequented by older crowds.

The places where events are taking place are also expanding, with the rise of free parties, which have seen a 34% increase since 2024.

 More are taking place in cafes, art galleries and record shops – blurring the line between traditional ‘going-out’ and experiencing music in different contexts, meaning that engagement with live music is increasingly accessible and at a lower price point.

Technological advancements are intensifying feelings of loneliness across all generations, with about two in five (43%) UK adults saying they find it difficult to meet new people, while over 80% report encountering barriers to meeting their social needs.

At a time of deep reliance on social media and phones for engagement with friends and family, many are yearning for in-person connection and the ability to meet new people with similar interests, which nightlife and clubbing can offer. Retro-themed events, such as Lío Group’s ‘70s and ‘80s disco nights, have seen a surge in attendance from over-45s looking to connect with like-minded individuals.

At the same time, platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook often unearth archival clips from warehouse raves and free parties of the past, showing dancefloors typically devoid of phones and showing euphoric partygoers with a greater sense of reckless abandon. This may well trigger feelings of nostalgia, particularly for the deep optimism and unity that scenes like acid house in the ‘80s and ‘90s fostered. In fact, half of Britons say they are nostalgic for the 1990s and early ‘00s, with Gen Zers recognising the appeal of these eras, too: 66% of 18 to 24-year-olds say they wish they could have gone on a ‘90s or ‘00s night out.

 Ekanayake points to currently shifting ideas around age and the cultural touchstones that come with it: “We no longer live in a society where one ‘grows up’ and forgets the pleasures of their youth. So this is just part of that change in people's behaviour.” 

Dr Bennett adds that music can form an important part of people’s identity, and there may be a strong desire to remain part of that culture. “People [are] wanting to reconnect with music that shaped their lives when they were younger. This could work as a valued escape from everyday life. They can use this music, then, to reconnect with past versions of themselves and important memories and friends.” She explains how promoters are increasingly understanding this market and putting on events aimed at older crowds, “which also gives this age group a more visible identity and music fans.”

 For older generations, clubbing offers a rare, embodied way to inhabit their youth again, rather than simply experiencing it through headphones or via a screen. Gen X-targeted events offer recognition, community and a sense that they, as a generation, still matter.

Dubbed ‘generation stay-at-home’, Gen Z’s preferred socialising method is staying in, with only 34% wanting to hang out with friends.

 They are also more likely than any other age group to want to socialise by playing video games or having video calls, or by participating in fitness or wellness activities. A 

 of Gen Zers are swerving alcohol altogether, with 39% of young men and 31% of young women now identifying as non-drinkers. This is a fundamental shift in how an entire generation relates to a substance often regarded as the ‘social glue’, inextricable from the culture of going out, and a large part of how music venues make money.

Dr Bennett argues that, while it doesn’t apply to all of Gen Z, “for some, their socialising habits changed during lockdown and the pandemic. Some of these then missed these crucial years of going out and socialising, which may have impacted the role of clubbing in their lives.” 

 In other words, clubbing simply never became the ritual stage of late teenagehood that it has been for so many generations. As well as the fact that Gen Z are drinking less and taking fewer party substances than previous generations, Dr Bennett cites the cost-of-living crisis as pricing the demographic out of going to events or drinking in pubs, and the fact that they have “other competing leisure options such as streaming and social media.” 

This movement towards teetotalism and, more generally, young people being priced out of nightlife is increasingly putting venues under financial strain, particularly small clubs (while many larger megaclubs, such as

 are flourishing with higher footfall.) This means that these smaller clubs and event spaces are increasingly courting over-45s with nostalgia and daytime events to help balance their books. At the same time, Gen Xers may be keen to pass on to their children the wholesome rave experiences they had in the past. DJ Fat Tony told 

: “When their children grow up, the nice parents from that culture want to take their kids out raving, and, dare I say it, give their children their first pill. That’s rave culture. That’s what they grew up on. I see it all the time.” 

Gen X clubbers are looking for moments of escapism and release on the dancefloor. As the ubiquity of phones and tech has made this harder (across all demographics), brands might consider hosting tech– or phone-free events. The pandemic reinforced the sacredness of nightlife for partygoers over the age of 45, and this has helped spur a surge in retro dance parties and nostalgic events. And it pays to recognise this demographic: Gen X are now the dominant force in global spending power.

Some are putting on fancy dress parties, such as London’s ‘time machine’ event Club de Fromage, or IDing over-40s punters on the door at Age Against The Machine, in a lighthearted nod to events of the past. 

 Brands might help Gen Xers achieve these moments of escapism and playfulness by recognising the desire to leave behind day-to-day concerns and to meet fellow music fans, and by encouraging bonding through shared cultural moments, such as programming DJs who were mainstays during Gen X’s clubbing heyday.

‘Age Is Just a Number’, a study of female clubbers over the age of 40, found that they felt nightlife notably improved their mental health, despite also battling prejudices around what is deemed ‘appropriate’ for their age group.

 It found that clubbing provided this demographic with an outlet for self-expression and greater social connectedness. There is a clear and increasing demand for nightlife and in-person socialising among Gen X, as 30% of UK adults between 44 and 59 said they would like to go out more often, while 

 of Gen Xers report having fewer friends than in the past. 

 As Ekanayake puts it: “There’s no age limit on music, and in these trying times, who doesn’t need a lift?” 

 Brands can help build positive connections within this age group through in-person activities and tangible experiences.

Older crowds – who are, crucially, the original rave generation – are reinvigorating the UK’s clubbing scene, and there is an opportunity for brands to harness that energy. ‘Hear me out… What if Gen X are actually the cool ones?’ a

, who describe themselves as two ‘rave divas’, document their experiences of 

 in Ibiza and festivals such as Junction 2 as older women, to a slew of positive comments such as: “I’ve seen my future and it’s bright!” Venues such as 

, which allows for dining and live music, or 

, which is hosting an over–40s 3-to-11 pm event and Soho’s 

 are appealing to older crowds, who may also feel more at home at low-key listening bars such as London’s 

. Brands might look to attract this demographic, putting on events with early finishes, greater accessibility and unique touches to appeal to over-45s audiences.
