What’s the future of the blockbuster?

In the summer of 2014, US box office figures were down 15%, and there were a string of spectacular film failures. The number of frequent moviegoers fell in every age group, but the biggest drop came from 18- to-25-year-olds. Has Netflix killed the blockbuster?

What do you think of when you consider the blockbuster? According to the Oxford Dictionary, a blockbuster is defined as “a thing of great power or size, in particular a film, book, or other product that is a great commercial success.” Not limited to cinematic behemoths like Star Wars or The Hunger Games, the term can also be applied to the runaway success of Friends or Lady Gaga’s debut album The Fame, which sold more than 15 million copies.
