In early June 2016, over 200 men and women headed to Brighton beach. They spent the afternoon chatting, picnicking, sunbathing and paddling. The only unusual detail in this picture-postcard scenario was that they were all topless. For this was a ‘Free The Nipple’ protest.
“Normalise all chests – tiny, droopy, perky, invested, mastectomy, saggy,” read a placard. “Stop sexualising us,” were the words written across one chest.
