Young people are choosing plants over partying

Younger people are reaping the benefits of green-fingered pursuits, turning to gardening for its positive impact on mental health and as a way to create moments of escapism. With big nights out being replaced by trips to the local garden centre, brands can help support these slower pursuits.

More young people are valuing the positives gained from gardening; 80% of 18- to 34-year-olds in the UK agree the hobby is 'cool' and over half would rather visit a garden centre than go to a nightclub. The survey, commissioned by DIY brand Draper Tools, also finds that people enjoy gardening for three reasons: to improve their living space, for mental health benefits, and to create somewhere they can get away from it all. Although most agree you don’t need a big outdoor space to be able to enjoy gardening, 60% say they would like more room for their green exploits.
