All over the world, countries are moving toward becoming cashless. While this does have its benefits – particularly for ostracised communities – it also creates issues for those people who rely mainly on cash and places a high level of power with large financial institutions.

Rapidly shifting market forces have made China the largest and most sophisticated digital (and notably mobile) payment market in the world. In turn, these forces are also changing consumer behaviour and pushing the country’s consumers towards a society that no longer uses cash.

With card and contactless payments becoming the norm for many Britons, the concept of a ‘cashless society’ is becoming a reality. What does this mean for charities that rely on people giving ‘spare change’? Canvas8 spoke to 20 Britons to understand how they’d prefer to donate on-the-spot.

Cash may be far from dead, but for many, going cashless is becoming an increasingly palatable concept. Although these payment options are nothing new, the way people make transactions is evolving – 47% of Brits carry less than £5 in cash at any one time, while almost three quarters of Brits say they’d use wearables to pay for drinks or transport. And it’s the convenience that’s winning them over – 82% of people say the speed of paying is the biggest plus.
