BT Sport is set to broadcast on YouTube

BT is going to make the Champions League and Europa League finals available to stream for free on YouTube. It will be the first time either final has been officially broadcast on the video platform, and could mark a major step in moving sport away from traditional media channels.

“We plan to make these finals the most social sports broadcast ever,” says John Petter, chief executive at BT. “We’ve always said we wanted to give top quality sport back to the people, and making the UEFA Champions League and Europa League finals free to everyone in the UK does this in a big way.” As well as free games being a contractual obligation in its acquisition of the TV rights, it’s been speculated that BT's decision stems from the fact that viewing figures for the Champions League have nosedived since the competition's move from ITV and Sky Sports, with BT Sport’s average reach peaking at an audience of 200,000. The move to YouTube could also be seen as a fight against the rise of illegal online streaming, where the most popular sites attract as many as eight million viewers per month.
