I’m saving so much! The science of BNPL perception

While BNPL options have become widely available, there's a gap in understanding how consumers view them and why they use them. Canvas8 spoke to Dr. Philippa Ward, Dr. Anita Zhao, and Dr. Ruffin Relja to unveil the world of BNPL customers – their perceptions, usage, and brand recommendations.

Philippa Ward

Dr. Philippa Ward is a professor of marketing at the University of Gloucestershire. With over 25 years of retail and academic experience, Dr. Ward's research centres on the effects of situational factors on consumers, the psychological and sociological determinants of consumption and the exploration of value. Her most recent work focuses on exploring BNPL services. She's leading a cross-institutional transdisciplinary team examining consumer responses and vulnerabilities to BNPL. The research has significant capacity to generate societal impact and policy outcomes.

Anita Zhao

Dr. Anita Zhao is an associate professor in business at Swansea University and specialises in researching online financial services adoption, sustainable consumption behaviours, and political engagement among young voters. Prior to her academic role, Dr. Zhao gained extensive experience in the industry covering public and private sectors, such as aviation, tourism, and exporting in China.

Ruffin Relja

Dr. Ruffin Relja is a senior lecturer in marketing at the University of Gloucestershire. He's passionate about teaching and researching consumer behaviour, brand management, and marketing communications. His work explores the relationships between consumers and brands/objects using multimodal research methods. This interest in consumer behaviour was generated through my previous management roles within Hugo Boss and Kenzo.

Tom Novak

Tom Novak is a senior behavioral analyst at Canvas8. After completing his second master's degree in cultural sociology at LSE, he was drawn to cultural insight. Tom has conducted qualitative and ethnographic research from the plazas of Santiago to Coventry's suburbs. In his spare time, he can be seen rowing down the Thames or world-building around feminist science fiction.
