Shoppers in the US are becoming more interested in a brand’s eco and ethical credentials, but only if the price is right. With many reluctant to pay a higher price for a sustainable product, many Americans believe it's the brand's responsibility to provide socially conscious items at more affordable prices.

With nearly three-quarters of Gen Yers and 51% of Boomers willing to pay more for sustainable products, eco-friendly living is no longer a niche pursuit. Yet many people are downplaying their eco credentials with inconspicuous purchases. Why aren’t consumers keen to appear ‘green’?

Plastic has gained a toxic reputation amid news of everyday polymers killing sea life. As a result, major brands are making efforts to minimise their impact on the planet, including sportswear manufacturer Adidas, which partnered with Parley to create apparel and trainers made from plastic waste.

In the 2018 mid-term elections, clothing brand Patagonia is openly endorsing two democratic candidates, who have petitioned to protect green spaces in their respective states. In doing so, the eco-conscious brand is answering politically minded Gen Y's expectations for brands to back their values.
