Wetherspoon beer mats call for Brexit

JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin has waded into the Brexit debate via 200,000 beer mats criticising the IMF. He’s a long-term Leave supporter, but could taking such a public political stance damage the iconic pub brand – or could polarising opinion be a good thing?

Beloved British pub chain JD Wetherspoon has circulated beer mats calling for the UK to leave EU, taking particular aim at Christine Lagarde and the IMF. The mats will be available in the company’s 920 pubs nationwide in the run-up to the June referendum, launching in the same week that three polls show the Leave campaign may be edging ahead. And while there might be furore on Twitter, studies show that polarisation can be a powerful engagement tool; it certainly worked for Protein World in 2015.
