Go anonymous and local with YikYak

Social network YikYak has raised $62 million in financing from the investors who backed Google and WhatsApp. Adding anonymity and geolocation to a Twitter-like stream, could YikYak, and its gossipy intimacy, be an indication of the future of social media?

The app serves up a live feed for wherever you are, streaming anonymous messages and statuses from people within a 1.5 mile radius. It’s been a hit on college campuses and schools, which have concentrated populations - an ideal breeding ground for gossip. But like Snapchat before it, YikYak's initial usage is being characterised by bad behaviour. Reports of cyberbullying and even shooting threats have led to campus lockdowns and geo-fences being erected to keep YikYak out.
