Over a quarter of internet use is currently in the English language, but that will have to change in order for the next billion users to come online. In India, where 90% of people don’t speak English, the majority believe digital content in local languages is more reliable.

In a country where there are more than two dozen dialects and over a billion mobiles, many experience difficulties using handsets because they’re not fluent in the English or Hindi they see on-screen. That’s why, from July 2017, every phone sold in India will feature at least one regional language.

If the internet were a country, it would be the fifth largest economy all on its own, but just 43% of people have access to it. Since 2013, Facebook has been working alongside names including Samsung and Qualcomm to fix this. But could making the internet accessible to all really be so simple?

Although India’s e-commerce market is set to grow by 67% in 2016, brick-and-mortar retail is still preferred by most people. Yellow Messenger is now attempting to bridge the gap between online and offline with an app that lets consumers engage local shops via a chat service on their smartphone.
