The Runway at Playa Vista mall in Los Angeles is home to a Whole Foods, a cinema, and a host of high-end stores and restaurants. But its next big tenant isn’t the kind of business you’d expect in a shopping centre – it's a doctor’s office set up by the Cedars-Sinai Health System.

Malls have been popping up everywhere in Bangkok. But new eco-friendly complex The Commons wants to take the shopping centre in a different direction, focusing on creating places for people to relax and spend time with others, effectively becoming a hub within the community.

Traditional ‘teen’ retailers like A&F are battling high unemployment rates, rapidly changing social landscapes and the increasingly fickle nature of fashion to stay afloat in a competitive market. But if teens aren’t dropping their cash here, then where are they shopping?

With the option to surf, skydive and shop all under the same roof, German studio J. Mayer H. is reinventing the shopping centre. Targeting adventurous visitors the department store will include a hotel and restaurants, alongside an array of experiential offerings.
