Burnt-out Gen Yers and Zers intend to ditch work

The pandemic has given rise to #antiwork, a movement of mainly Gen Yers and Zers focused on ‘ending work’ or achieving a better work-life balance. Stresses and structural changes from the pandemic are changing perceptions of work, and people want to realign how work fits into their lives.

Throughout the pandemic, people have had time to reflect on their work-life balance and question if it aligns with their wants and needs. Gen Yers and Zers, are expressing their views through the #antiwork movement, which emerged during 2020-21 and has gradually gained traction and attention. The movement is essentially the opposite of hustle culture and sees people quitting their jobs or drastically reducing their hours to create a lifestyle that works more in their favour. The r/antiwork subreddit, for "those who want to end work, are curious about ending work, want to get the most out of a work-free life," has tripled its subscribers since March 2020. The movement appeals most to those who reject the idea of the ‘rat race’ and ‘living to work’.
