Only 13% of employees worldwide say they’re engaged with or enthusiastic about their job, while 18% of US workers say that they’re actively disengaged from their work. Job satisfaction is a growing issue. Unsatisfied procrastinating workers are costly to employers – in Britain, where the average worker procrastinates for 218 minutes a day, that cost amounts to £76 billion annually. Resolving the monday blues might be a good start, seeing as 64% of people say they lack motivation on Mondays, including those who enjoy their work. Getting employees excited in anticipation for a Monday event or encouraging them to exercise before work are some of the ways to do it.

Britons are seeking a better work-life balance but aren’t seeing it – especially in advertising, where long hours and inflexibility have sparked walkouts. As firms realise changing norms around working hours, they’re taking steps to accommodate flexible working arrangements.

The glorification of busyness, alongside technology that enables employees to be always-on, has contributed to an overworked global workforce. A full 61% of Americans are stressed about work and 68% of British workers think they are working harder than they were in 2014. But with greater awareness around mental health issues, and work’s capacity to exacerbate them, people are starting to take back control by trying to draw clearer boundaries between life and work.

With 4.5 million self-employed people in the UK and 53 million Americans taking on freelance work, the office-based nine-to-five no longer employs such a huge majority. And with the number of freelancers in the US set to increase 40% by 2020, the needs of a new generation of workers are different to those of their office-based counterparts. A number of brands are now stepping up to help people manage nomadic lifestyles.
