Why are British drinkers developing a taste for spirits?

While clear spirits have long enjoyed prominence in the British market, the category has recently benefited from an extended upswing in consumer interest. But what is driving the growing appeal of characterful white spirits among British consumers, and can we expect these trends to continue?

Conor O’Keeffe

Conor O’Keeffe is a distiller at Holyrood Distillery, Edinburgh. Prior to undertaking his Brewing and Distilling Certification and joining the production team, O’Keeffe gained almost 20 years experience as a bartender in venues in Ireland, Sweden, Melbourne, Guadalajara, and Scotland, most recently at Nauticus in Leith.

Dave Marsland has been working as Saint Lucia Distillers’ brand ambassador for the past decade, bringing his love of rum to all parts of the UK and beyond. With a history of bar ownership, retail outlets and festivals, he is well placed in his current role managing sales in the north of England for Spiribam UK.

Jacopo Mazzeo

Dr. Jacopo Mazzeo is a freelance wine and drinks journalist and consultant.
He regularly contributes to leading trade and consumer publications including Wine Enthusiast, Whisky Magazine, Decanter, Meininger, Club Oenologique, Harper's, Pix Wine, and Good Beer Hunting. He consults on consumer trends and marketing strategy and offers copywriting services to drinks firms and agencies. Jacopo is a former sommelier, he judges international wine, beer, and spirits competitions, and sat twice on the board of directors of the British Guild of Beer Writers. Before he embraced full-time journalism, he studied musicology at the University of Bologna and took a PhD at the University of Southampton.
