How is therapy culture changing in the US?

Therapy culture has entered the mainstream, and its prevalence on social media is changing how people form relationships and relate to one another – to the point that ‘therapy talk’ is now experiencing some pushback. What’s causing this cultural shift as people seek tools to support their wellbeing?

Sara London

Sara London is a freelance journalist, author, and satirist-when-convenient. She has a graduate degree in an individualised psychoanalytic research intensive from New York University. She writes articles about psychology, wellness, pop culture, and the future of work. Sara’s first book, The Performance Therapist and Authentic Therapeutic Identity: Coming Into Being (2023), explores tenets of performance art melded with psychoanalytic theory to create the hopeful new notion of a performance therapist.

Karen Conlon

Karen Conlon is the founder and clinical director of Cohesive Therapy NYC. She earned a master’s degree in social work from New York University and has extensive training in hypnosis, anxiety, cognitive behavioural therapy, brainspotting, and DGBI. She is a member of the Institute of Certified Anxiety Treatment Professionals, The Rome Foundation, the National Association of Social Workers, and the American Social of Clinical Hypnosis. Conlon is also a published author, sought-out subject expert, and hosts the So, Hows Therapy? podcast.

Jodie Cariss

Jodie Cariss is the founder of Self Space, a therapist with over 18 years of experience in the field, and a Tavistock-trained executive coach. Cariss has fast become a leading voice advocating for accessible mental health support. She is the co-author of How to Grow Through What You Go Through (2022) and regularly contributes to panel talks, podcasts, and media titles such as Stylist, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and The Times. Her experience is vast, spanning global sectors as both a consultant and an ambassador.

Having weaved a career that started in PR and social, and led to journalism before turning to the dark side (brand side), Mariella is able to execute all kinds of projects. From research to editorial, ideation to creation. Mariella worked within the fashion industry - both in London and Dubai - for over ten years at publications and brands such as Bustle, ELLE UK, Ounass, Wednesday, MATCHESFASHION.COM and Grazia Middle East. Now, Mariella focuses her energy on culturally conscious conversations, whether that’s consulting and strategising for her clients, or writing about positive escapism, sustainable style, mindfulness and women empowerment.
