We’re all being invited to dive into a ‘post-pandemic’ festive season. But as well as that term ignoring the stubborn presence of COVID-19, much of the anxiety that marked last year’s celebrations has simply evolved rather than dissipated. For many, financial worries have grown, and supply-chain issues mean even those who can spend may have to go without. The memory of changed or cancelled plans in 2020 has given these holidays an in-built uncertainty, made worse by growing guilt around wasteful traditions in a climate crisis. Is a bullish attitude to celebration covering a sense of panic? Can our old traditions still comfort us? Or do we need something more than holiday cheer?
