At this time of year, the excess of holiday celebrations is often mentally, financially, and emotionally squared away by the promise of a disciplined and nourishing January. New year’s resolutions, once modest promises and now heartfelt declarations to change entire lifestyles, will soon crowd social media, covering everything from adopting immunity foods to embracing virtual fitness to becoming financially free. But currently, with Covid-19 cases up by 8% globally, a déjà vu beat of precarity is haunting our commitments to be better versions of ourselves come 2022. In the face of broad uncertainty – Omicron, climate catastrophe, perpetual economic despondency – we turn to smaller moments of choice and control that make us feel inwardly safe and help us find joy. This new year, as people are able to glean certainty only from their local environments, it will be the micro changes that hold the most promise, and the messages that make change feel possible will resonate most.
