Why are apps starting to look the same?

The clamour of modern urban life – in both the physical and digital worlds – can sometimes be overwhelming. In the first of a two-part report, Canvas8 looks at how complexion reduction is seeing apps redesigned with bold headers, simple icons and reduced colour for a unified mobile experience.

From Instagram to Apple Music, mobile apps are being stripped down and made more monochromatic. This shift in development isn’t just about aesthetics – it indicates a new focus on user-centric design and unified interfaces. ‘Complexion reduction’ – coined by Michael Horton, designer at New York-based digital agency Swarm – is seeing app redesigns take on three distinct traits: the use of bold headlines, simplified universal icons, and less colour.

“The user interfaces of some of our favourite apps are starting to look more and more like they could all be housed under the same brand,” Horton writes. [
