Are selfies a force for good?

Selfies ruin trips to galleries, interrupt nights out, and feed an unhealthy preoccupation with looks. But they’re also being used to champion the individual and non-mainstream beauty. As brands launch selfie campaigns, can they engage audiences in a way that’s helpful, not harmful?

Selfies are vapid, anti-social and annoying. They ruin trips to galleries, interrupt nights out, and feed an unhealthy preoccupation with looks. It’s easy to decry selfie takers as conceited pavement-hoggers, but increasingly, these snaps are being used for positive political purposes. We’ve had the defiant selfie, the ugly selfie – now it’s the turn of the self-love selfie.
