What beauty brands can do to diversify

Black women have long been underrepresented by cosmetics brands in terms of product ranges and advertising campaigns. But as the global population becomes more diverse – and as companies recognise the diversity that’s always existed – could the beauty market be set for an overhaul?

Racial diversity is increasing across the world – Hispanics, Asians and African-Americans now account for over a third of the US population – and many businesses are starting to acknowledge the diversity that’s always existed. [1][2] This is manifesting itself in a new standard of beauty and an increase in cosmetic products that reflect that diversity.

While non-white consumers have long complained about a lack of availability of suitable products and a distinct preference for fair skin and hair in media images of perfect beauty, a significant shift is now taking place. [
