Why we all crave a sugar high

The WHO wants to bring sugar consumption down to 26-32g a day - but even a single can of cola contains 40g. The road ahead might be long and bitter, but the war on sugar has already begun.

Scope
We have come a long way since the days when sugar was an exquisite and rare treat. Now, we eat it every day, in huge amounts. The UK faces the highest rates of obesity, type II diabetes and heart disease worldwide. The government has set a recommended daily allowance at 50-64g of added sugar a day – but the World Health Organization (WHO) wants to bring consumption down to 26-32g. Is this really attainable when a single can of cola contains 40g? [1]
