 by 2020 - people’s expectations of what the tech can deliver, are also growing. And, no matter how functional the device is, people want it to remain unintrusive - 53% of Americans want wearables to look more like jewellery, while Amazon’s Echo exemplifies tech that’s there when necessary, and invisible when not - and it’s estimated that 11 million devices have already been sold.

While rapid advancements in tech are leaving many people 

, brands blending functionality with design to boot, are hitting the sweetspot of innovation that takes a back seat. Google’s latest home assistant - the 

 - is designed to blend into the background of people’s homes, while 

 combines a barely-there design with seamless functionality to seduce smart home owners. Similarly, taking note of 

 with human-bot interactions, Google’s Pixel 2 comes with a ‘squeeze feature’ that activates the phone’s AI assistant, without the need to press buttons or say ‘OK Google’. And with 

 saying the awkwardness of addressing such devices in public leads them to avoid them, techn devices that whisper rather than shout are proving successful.

We’re now constantly connected – the average person checks their phone 150 times a day – but it’s an unwanted burden for many. Canvas8 spoke with cyborg anthropologist Amber Case, author of Calm Technology, to understand the importance of designing tech that respects people’s limited attention.
