 digital appointments for minor issues if it speeds up the process, they prefer face-to-face consultations with their doctor as they feel they’ll receive a better understanding of any potential diagnosis. Just 17% of them say they’d be interested in talking with their physician over a video call, and 14% would be willing to do so over web-based chat.

But, as in most sectors, technological advances are forcing through changes in the way that traditional consultations are conducted. 

 lets users video chat with their physicians, who can diagnose and send prescriptions to nearby pharmacies or direct patients to a lab for testing. 

, meanwhile, makes healthcare accessible in the workplace. If integrated properly, a combination of such tech could cut doctor’s visits that don’t require a physical exam by 70%.

For those who don’t want to talk a real person, 

 is a voice-activated Amazon Alexa app that combines data from over 100,000 certified doctors to make a diagnosis. Similarly, UK-based start-up 

 launched its AI-powered chatbot in 2017, and 

 helps people self-diagnose more accurately with the help of AI. All these examples also consult ‘real’ doctors and give the option for live chats with physicians – it’s that extra peace of mind that robo-docs currently just don’t provide.

With GP appointments increasingly hard to get, digital consultations are being hailed as a way to ease the pressure on the NHS. But would people feel comfortable talking about their medical problems through a screen? Canvas8 spoke to 20 Britons to discover how they’d prefer to reach their doctor.
