    With 2 million users, a deal with Starbucks, and $6 billion worth of transactions, Square is turning smartphones into checkouts, digitising loyalty schemes and reshaping how consumers spend – without using NFC technology.

    Pay with Square is a mobile-payment app available for iPhone and Android. It links to a credit or debit card and allows items to be paid for with minimal hassle. Unlike NFC-based competitors like Google Wallet, Pay with Square can automatically open a tab as customers walk through the door, using GPS technology. At the checkout, a name is given and the cashier validates payment by glancing at a photo on the Square Register app. It’s the simplest payment method to date.
