Millions of Brazilians, particularly those in the north-west of the country, cannot afford medication. As a result, a large proportion of the population resorts to self-medication, using herbs or medicinal plants to cure minor illnesses. However, these 'medicines' are taken based on oral or written tradition and are not necessarily safe, accurate or relevant.
Farmácia Viva (Living Pharmacy) is an ongoing project that hopes to bring about understanding of these ancient remedies, verify their effects and teach millions of poor Brazilians how to cultivate them both cheaply and effectively. -
