The inability of some people's professional lives to fulfil their identity needs has left a gap that many seek to fill in their spare time. Some try to escape into a fantasy world of adventure tourism or extreme thrills, while others go online to become who they want to be. Either way, a subtle, widespread fantasy is taking place which, suffused with the hopes and dreams of an emerging generation, is becoming increasingly intoxicating as it comes ever closer to reality. This is the phenomenon of Living the Dream. The route to stardom appears to have cleared. For many, the story of Justin Bieber’s rise from YouTube obscurity to over 1.5 billion hits is seared onto the consciousness. 'Garagebanders', graduating from making amateurish follies on MySpace to looking professional on Soundcloud, are promised critique and encouragement from a community of experts, including potential agents. The convenient allure of ‘one-click’ publishing to YouTube through iMovie or YooStar might explain the 176,000 full-length Hollywood releases-worth of content uploaded onto YouTube each week.(1)
